Zambia Budget 4WD Campervan Hire

Livingstone and Lusaka are the two depots where you can collect and return you 4WD campervan.

Britz and Caprivi are the two campervan hire suppliers that provide the range of vehicles to rent.

There are vehicles that accommodate two adults. These are either a truck camper with beds in the rear of the vehicle or a Toyota Hilux with a roof tent. The roof tent is preferable to a tent that can be pitched on the ground both for safety and for coolness.

The vehicles are usually Toyota Hilux or the Toyota Land Cruiser.

The 4-berth has twin tents on the roof of the vehicle. These are accessed by a ladder. Customers need some agility to scale these.

Using a 4wd camper in Zambia is essential to enter the game parks. No off-roading is permitted but the main tracks and trails through the game parks are rough roads often with pot-holes.

Using a 4wd gives good access to most areas of the Parks. Full cooking facilities are on board. You are advised not to leave your vehicle when travelling in the Game Parks.

Always camp overnight in designated camp areas. These are usually unfenced and it won't be unusual to have animals wandering through these parks at night.

Make sure there is plenty of food onboard and plenty of water as it sometimes difficult to find outside of the campsites.

Cross boarder documentation can be supplied if itineraries involve travelling into Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, Lesotho, Mozambique and Swaziland.

Plan ahead and leave some flexibility in your itinerary as the animals, the weather and the beauty all conspire to make you stay longer than you had planned.

Yes, the roads are very rough, often just tracks and are subject to flooding. These are especially difficult during the rainy season from November to April.

About 1000kms are tarred roads and 8000kms are rough unsealed roads. If you are not sure about how to drive a 4x4 Toyota or Nissan then try out a 4WD before you leave home as the roads in Zambia can be challenging.

What should I pack for a camper van trip to Zambia?

Africa can be very hot during the day and quite chilly at night. Pack for cool evenings so take a light jacket or jumper. Loose cotton is cool. Take layers as the temperature does change throughout the day and into dusk. Africa is a conservative society so keep knees covered and the small of the back (no short t-shirts please).

Don't pack your best clothes. Zambia is a dusty place and the dust does get everywhere. Keep one outfit for dining out or visiting people's homes. Pack walking boots for during the day and trainers for in and out of the camper.

Don't pack that much. You have enough room for the basics. Take a soft bag and not a hard case for storage in the camper.
