How Far Should I Drive our Campervan Every Day in the U.K.?

If you are on holiday and exploring a country then we recommend driving only about 50 miles a day maximum if you are driving every day.

If you want to get up early and drive 100 miles to get to your destination that you are going to spend a few days at then this is the best time of day to travel. Touring in a campervan is great as you can park up , have a coffee, sleep, stay the night or move on a whim.

Try not to be too ambitious on the distances that you want to travel. Bear in mind that campervans and motorhomes are generally slower than cars so take your time and enjoy the view!

Can I free camp (wild camp) in the UK?

Yes and No!

  1. If you find yourself in a remote area with no-one around then it is usually ok. We found that we could free camp all over Scotland with no problems at all.
  2. If you are unsure, then just ask. Many pubs/restaurants will let you stay in their car park overnight if you have a meal there. This can be really useful if you are on your way somewhere.
  3. Try joining the Caravan Club to take advantage of their smaller more personal sites that are in great locations at really good rates.

Should I use GPS to plan my roadtrip in the UK?

Yes but take note of the height and width of your campervan or motorhome.

Take extra care before driving around the narrow country lanes or fishing village streets in the UK as many are very narrow and bridges very low. A useful tool on GPS is finding out distance and journey times. These are really useful when travelling during peak times, as the GPS system is live and linked to traffic and weather conditions, it will automatically calculate any delays.

What are the busiest times of year for campervan hire in the UK?

July and August are peak times for booking campervan hire in the UK. The schools are on holiday at this time and many visitors arrive from overseas to take advantage of the summer weather.

The Glastonbury Festival weekend is also booked out well in advance. This is usually at the end of June to the beginning of July. Check out major sporting events too as many campers are booked for motor-racing events and top international events too.

Are campervans in the UK child friendly?

Absolutely! A camper or motorhome is often the best option for a family holiday as it offers so much flexibility. The larger motorhomes often have a choice of sleeping arrangements and have the option of bunk beds or large doubles for tall teenagers!

Book well in advance to ensure that you get the layout of your choice.

How Old Do I have to be to rent a campervan or motorhome in UK?

The minimum age for a driver is 21 years old and the maximum is 75 years old. Check the terms and conditions before you book as you have to be 25 or older to drive some of the larger motorhomes.

Do I need a Special Licence to rent a campervan in UK?

Your standard driving licence is acceptable as long as it covers Class B. You are advised to take an international driving licence to complement this.

Can I take my pet in a U.K. campervan?

Many of our rental suppliers offer the option to take your pet on holiday with you.

We all like to take our dog on holiday so why not take it with you in a campervan? Please note that you may be charged an extra cleaning fee or higher security deposit when booking to take you pet with you.

Can I rent bikes with my campervan or motorhome in UK?

Yes there is the option to rent bicycles and a bike rack with your hire.

How Do I get to the U.K. depot to pick up my campervan?

Getting to the depot varies slightly with each rental supplier in UK. Transfers from the airport are often offered but you may be charged extra. Most depots are close to either airports or train stations.

Are Campsites open in Winter in UK?
