Australia Campervan Hire: FAQs
Costs of Hiring A Campervan in Australia.
Are there any hidden costs?
There are no hidden costs. Once you have selected your choice of vehicle and filled in the information boxes a list of optional extras will be given. You can then make your choices by ticking the boxes. These are all optional. Details are explained beside each cost and highlighted by info buttons.
If you need any assistance during this stage, please call or email us.
The daily rate is listed separately from all other costs.
The next most expensive charge is for insurance. If you take no additional insurance, then in most cases a higher bond will be required when you collect your vehicle.
You will be offered the option to reduce the insurance excess either when you book or when you collect your campervans.
Please make sure you have enough credit on your credit card to cover the bond or the insurance excess.
Bonds will cover the insurance excess and if you take full cover insurance you will still be required to leave a bond to ensure that the vehicle is returned in a good and clean condition to the correct location. If you have any questions about the various options, please ask. The cost of insurance varies between different rental companies and vehicles.
Other optional extras such as tables and chairs or BBQs are listed as you go through the booking process.
Yes. You will have to make your own way to the campervan or motorhome rental depot. The distance and and approximate costs of taxis are shown next to the map of where the depot is. Please make allowance for this additional cost.
You will be supplied with a full gas bottle, some chemicals for the wc if on board. The fuel tank will be full. You will need to return the camper with a full fuel tank but not generally the gas bottle.
All charges are listed here including credit card charges.
Any additional taxes, relocation fees etc are also listed here.
Toll Roads. You will be liable for all toll road costs. Watch out for toll roads in and around Sydney and Melbourne. There are others but these are the ones people sometimes don't realise they are on. Ask when you collect your camper.
Most campervans and motorhomes in Australia come fully equipped with bedding, towels, tea-towels, kitchen equipment. Breakdown cover is also included. You are sometimes supplied with a free map and tourist information.

No, you don't - a campervan can be driven with a standard full car licence. However each person who wishes to drive a campervan needs to bring their own valid original licence. If the licence is not in English it will have to have an English translation if you are from a non English speaking country.
You must have held a full drivers license for a minimum of 1 year. All terms and conditions are listed on the booking page. Please read these before you enter your payment details. Please check the terms on each vehicle. If you are unsure, please contact us.
Yes. Ask someone to watch you reverse or park while you get used to the extra length of the campervan. Motorhomes often have a bed over the card so be aware that this "luton" overhang nearest to the hedge. Driver's sometimes forget about this and damage the front left above the passenger.
There are plenty of mirrors to help you and in some cases reversing cameras.
Drive slower than you would in a car.
Yes, we make both manual and automatic campervans and motorhomes. Check when you are looking at which vehicles you want to hire. The type of transmission is listed alongside each of the campervans and motorhomes.

Roads in Australia are often dirt tracks or "unsealed". They are usually well maintained and graded regularly but it does mean that your windscreen has a higher chance of damage by flying stones. This is an extra cover option offered by some campervan and motorhome rental suppliers.
Tyre coverage also covers damage to tyres from sharp stones and rocks on these roads. This cover is not included in the standard insurance cover.

If you are renting a campervan or motorhome you may not know which companies offer the best service or the best quality campervans or motorhomes to rent.
We have been collecting reviews from all of our customers for many years and asked them to give their rental experience a star rating.
We then publish these rankings on our website to that you can see what other customers have said about the campervan or motorhome they have rented.
This is so useful when trying to choose which campervan or motorhome is best for you.
Five Stars is the top of the range and highest quality with customers experiencing a Superb Rental.
Campervans and Motorhomes are brand new when they arrive on the rental fleets so have no mileage on the clock. When our customers start to rent a camper they are very ambitious and adventurous and so drive long distances to see as much of Australia as they can.
The next customer and the next customer does the same and so the mileage on the campers and motorhomes gets quite high after a couple of years.
Expect to rent a camper with high mileage if it is over 2 to 3 years old.
All the vehicles that we rent out are well maintained and looked after but after long distances and the bull dust in the outback all take its toll.
Try to book early and try to book the youngest campervan or motorhome you can for a better experience.
Please avoid driving at night or early or late in the day in Australia.
There are wandering animals on the roads and they are not small. They are also difficult to see as they blend in well to their surroundings.
Colliding with any of these animals causes severe damage to both the animals, you and the campervan.
Bull dust is a very fine red dust that is very common on roads in the Australian outback.
It causes problems because it gets everywhere! Even with screens on windows you will find that after a long-distance drive your campervan or motorhome will have bull dust inside.
It is also a problem as it conceals pot holes on the road and reduces visibility when churned up by other vehicles or road trains.
Put your headlights on and take care and try not to get into any deep ruts or holes.
Reduce your speed.
Yes you can but it is probably cheaper to travel across as a foot passenger and collect another camper in Tasmania. You could also fly over and collect a camper there and then fly on to another depot to continue your rental.
We are very experienced. After 20 years arranging campervan and motorhome hire for our clients we are very good.
