Many of our customers will be renting a 4wd for the first time. Although driving a 4x4 is much the same as driving a car there are very important differences when driving a 4x4 vehicle. If you can book yourself onto a 4wd course before you rent you will feel more confident when tackling off-road driving in Australia.
The four-wheel drive camper is heavier and larger than your car so take it slower. You may not be used to driving a heavier vehicle. The weight makes a difference on how you take corners, so take it steady until you get used to it.
The camper is probably higher than the cars that you are used to driving. Make sure you are aware of the height when parking up and travelling. Remember to avoid low hanging branches. Check the height too when entering under cover car parks.
Use your mirrors. You have two large side mirrors that give you good visibility on each side of your camper. You won't be able to see through the rear of the camper
Allow extra distance between you and the vehicle in front of you to give you more time to slow down and stop. Don't forget you have a whole house behind the driving seat!
Avoid driving during the night, dusk and dawn. Australia has many large wandering animals that are found on roads during these times.
Hiring a 4wd allows you to visit remote locations. Make sure someone knows where you are going and when you expect to return. To be safe consider renting a satellite phone as normal mobile phone signals are poor or non existence in the Outback of Australia. Many companies equip a PLB (Personal Locator Beacon) to their 4wd vehicles to provide tracking in case of an emergency.
Make sure you have plenty of food, water and fuel for your journey. You will be far from any shops or garages. Take plenty of water for your camper too.
If you do encounter a break down or emergency in the Outback, you must stay with your vehicle. Activate your PLB.
You will be shown how to change from 2-wheel-drive to 4-wheel-drive when you collect your 4wd camper. It may mean that you have to lock the wheels manually. Make sure you know how this is done so that you can drive safely on unsealed tracks, dirt roads and off-road. Don't forget to change back to 2wd when you are back on sealed roads.
There are usually two settings for 4wd. The low-range setting is for real-off road and challenging conditions at low speeds. High range is for normal driving on tracks and dirt roads.
Your 4wd camper may be equipped with an air compressor. You may sometimes need to reduce the pressure in the tyres to ensure greater grip. You will need the compressor to re-inflate the tyres.
Even though you have rented a 4wd camper be aware that there are still roads and areas of Australia that you will not be permitted to drive to. This is for your own safety. There are also culturally sensitive areas where special permission is required to access.
While a normal driving licence is required for a 4x4 or campervan rental you may also need an international driving licence with an English translation to rent a camper in the Northern Territories.
