Options for Campervan Hire Italy

What kind of Italian road trip are you dreaming of? A scenic tour through the Tuscan countryside, stopping at wine farms and historic little towns for gelato? Thinking of moving between Rome, Milan and Venice? And then, with the picture of your perfect holiday in mind, who do you want to go with? These are the questions that will help you decide what motorhome will actually make your Italian adventure as memorable as possible.

If you’re travelling with children, then we’d recommend a campervan hire in Italy with single beds.

The iconic VW Camper with a pop-top roof is one of the best campers in Italy. Our customers have reported back (thanks, families!) that their kids love climbing up into their beds in the pop-top roof. It’s apparently an exciting place to sleep (or not!). You’ll find plenty of these for hire around Rome, though they’re not available in every city.

This camper is also ideal for two friends travelling together, or a couple.

Then there’s the VW California Camper, which is cheap to run and can park anywhere. The exact same can be said about this one (friends and couples - ideal!).

When travelling in Italy with the whole family or a group of friends, you’ll want to get a larger RV and choose between single beds, double beds or bunk beds. Also, if travelling with kids or across the countryside, you’ll likely want an onboard shower and WC. All our larger motorhomes have them, and plenty of hot water for showers, whether for washing off the sea when you come off the beach, or taking a hot shower after a long hike. Once you're done, head off to the next village for another adventure.

These campers also have loads of room for staying inside and relaxing, and a combination of single, bunk and double beds.

The onboard cooking facilities in these Italian motorhomes are enough to cater for the whole family. Food is so important to Italians, and there are many brilliant markets and shops to buy top-class fresh local food.

Top Tips for Your Campervan Hire in Italy

Our absolute top tip for your Italian campervan road trip is to stay in campsites or the free "stopping places". Having onboard facilities makes using these possible (it’s also great to have an onboard WC when travelling during the day).

There is simply nothing better than being totally self-sufficient in a campervan. You can stay anywhere and stop anytime to rest and relax.

All campervans and motorhomes have fridges on board – even the small camping cars have a chilly box. This is essential during the warm summer months in Italy. Some campers even have a small freezer compartment in the fridge, too. Essential for chilling drinks and keeping water ice cold!

Your RV Has Everything You Need to Discover Italy

We’ve thought of everything, so you don’t have to.

Many of our larger motorhomes have "garages" - a place to keep beach toys, bicycles, surfboards and holiday stuff. It can also be used for fishing rods, hiking boots or skis - Italy is a diverse space, and it’s your adventure. All we know is that the extra space is so handy when travelling for a couple of weeks.

Our campervans and motorhomes are designed to ensure you tour Italy in comfort. Our suppliers have thought of everything to make your holiday relaxing and enjoyable.

Outdoor tables and chairs are an option so that you can sit outside and relax. Bicycle hire is also an option with some motorhomes. You can park up and take a quick ride into town or enjoy one of the many cycle tracks across Italy. After all, renting a motorhome or campervan in Italy makes visiting even the remotest of Italian villages possible, so you’d have incredible sights to see.

If it’s beaches you’re after, check out the campsites right next to the beaches. Italy has superb mountains too. Wait for winter and take your campervan to the slopes. Store your skis in the garage and park up on the mountain. The campervans have heaters, so you’ll stay warm at night and be ready for the slopes in the early morning.

There is nowhere like Italy - it’s a magical country to tour in a campervan with your friends, partner or family.

And here’s an insider tip - we offer cheaper campervan rental rates than booking direct with the rental companies in Italy.

Every day we update the special offers and discounts on our website. Not only do we update the Special discount page, but the booking engine automatically loads the discounts as you select your campervan or motorhome.

How do we reduce the cost of your rental, you ask? By applying our bulk discount that we get from the campervan rental suppliers, as we book such large numbers of campers every year in Italy.

There are a few reasons:

  1. The earlier you book, the more likely you’ll get your first choice of camper or motorhome.

  2. The fleets of campers are quite small, so availability is limited.

  3. People from all over the world visit Italy at all times of the year. It is very busy during the summer months, and the campers are booked up really quickly.

  4. The rates are based on a flex rate system, meaning that they increase the closer you get to the collection date. Book early, and you’ll get a cheaper daily rate.

Yes, you can, but there are a minimum number of days that must be paid for.

It also takes slightly longer to process a one-way booking request, and sometimes relocation fees are added to the cost of the rental.

The insurance excess is between £600.00 and €2000.00 in Italy. So, if any damage occurs to the vehicle, you’ll need to pay this, up to a maximum of the security deposit.

You will need to have a credit card to cover the insurance excess. Check that the credit limit on your card is more than €2000.00.

€2000.00 will be deducted from your credit card when you collect the campervan. This will be refunded when you return the campervan in good and clean condition to the correct location at the agreed time.

We always say check with the locals, but we have heard that in the more remote areas, it’s tolerated. However, it’s super important to leave no trace.

This means to make sure you clean up so that it is as if you have never been there. This will help keep the friendly relationship that campervan renters have with the locals.

Aree di Sosta are official rest areas and overnight camping areas for campervans and motorhomes. There are printed guides and an app available for locating these. Check in at the local tourist office for directions.

Yes, campsites are open all year round in Italy. Check out the temperatures online and plan your trip.

Don't forget that you can rent for a ski season in Italy too.

Honestly, Italy is such a great place to visit with a group of friends. Just be sure to sort out the sleeping arrangements before you book your camper.

Travelling together as a family is great fun, but make allowances for those who may need a little space from time to time.

Thinking of travelling with your romantic partner? This is always wonderful, and you can share the chores and plan the adventure together. Make sure you have room to take all the stuff you need.

Consider renting two vans if you want to share your holiday with friends or family. This gives you a bit more flexibility on what you do and where you go. You can always meet up again in the evening for a meal under the stars. It offers more privacy at night, too.

There is, of course, plenty of information online - start with Visit italy - official tourist website. We suggest having a basic plan, but allow time to stay a little longer in some places and divert to others.

We also suggest taking maps and a guidebook, and not to rely totally on GPS or your mobile phone for directions. By all means, use them to complement the map, but keep in mind that you never know if you are going to lose signal or power.
