This is the one most people get wrong. Scotland's celebrated right to wild camp, under the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, applies to walkers and tents, not to motor vehicles. Campervans and motorhomes must use campsites or designated motorhome stopovers, or seek the landowner's permission to park overnight on private land. There's a growing network of official stopovers and aires across Scotland, often £5–£15 a night, so you're never short of legal, low-cost places to stay.

Most vehicles come with unlimited mileage, comprehensive insurance (with an excess), a fully equipped kitchen, gas, heating and on-board facilities on larger models. Bedding, kitchen kits, bike racks and GPS are often optional extras rather than included, so it's worth checking the specific inclusions when you book. If you're based in the UK, bringing your own bedding is an easy way to keep costs down.

Yes. Suppliers hold a refundable security deposit on a credit card, released after the vehicle is returned in good condition. The amount varies, but if you decline the excess-reduction cover you should be prepared for a deposit of £2,000 or more. Taking out additional excess insurance typically reduces this significantly, and with some suppliers down to zero. The deposit is separate from the insurance excess.
