South Africa Campervan Hire, Motorhome and RV Rental.

South Africa has long been well known for its safaris and stunning cities, but have you heard about the award-winning Garden Route or beaches? Touring around South Africa in a campervan is a voyage of discovery.

If you’re feeling nervous about how to go about renting a campervan, we are here to help. It’s a similar process to renting a car, but there are a few other considerations to think about.

Motorhome Rental Considerations in SA

Firstly, where is everybody going to sleep? Not all campervans, 4WD campers, motorhomes and RVs are laid out the same inside. Some have enough room for six to sleep in three double beds, while others have a mixture of doubles, bunk beds and single beds too.

The larger motorhomes in South Africa have built-in showers and WC's. These are fully equipped for sleeping and eating. They also come with a small, well-equipped kitchen as standard.

The range of camper rental vehicles varies from depot to depot, and there is a different range between Johannesburg and Cape Town.

In remote areas, the vehicles are mostly 4x4 Land Cruisers and Toyota Hiluxes. Those who are more adventurous rent four-wheel drive vehicles to explore game parks (like the famous Kruger National Park) and travel dirt roads.

The sleeping arrangements in these 4WD vehicles are often roof tents - a certain degree of agility is required to climb the exterior ladder to these tents.

Motorhome Rental Company Options in SA

South Africa has long-established international motorhome companies that serve Southern Africa. These are also well known in Australia and New Zealand, with names such as Britz and Maui.

South Africa also has its own local companies, such as Avis Safari South Africa, Bobo Campers ZA, and Happy Campers ZA. Combined, there is a wealth of campervans to choose from to match both your needs and budget.

South Africa also has a very high standard of competitively priced campsites. We recommend that our customers spend every night in a campsite, as they allow you to save money while experiencing spectacular landscapes.

Yes, there are many on the Garden Route and between most towns. However, an hour or two can sometimes pass between petrol stations, so always make sure that you carry extra cans of fuel when travelling to remote areas.

All main roads have filling stations. In remote areas you may be offered fuel from cans. Be careful about using this option, though, as it’s difficult to check if it is the correct fuel for your vehicle.

Filling stations accept credit cards, but keep cash on hand for the rare occasions where this is not the case. Petrol stations are usually not self service and a small tip is often expected as the operator will fill the vehicle and also wash the windscreen.

If you are looking to see lots of wildlife, then it’s best to travel during the South African winter, which is between May and August. If you’re looking for a beach holiday then travel during South Africa's warmer months - October to April. December and January are the busiest times in this exciting country.

When driving open roads, we strongly recommend that you don't, especially around game parks, as night is a very active time for animals. They can often be asleep on the roads or wandering around and can be difficult to see.

If you’re in Cape Town, Johannesburg, or SA’s other cities, driving at night is fine, but we recommend that you stick to major roads.

There may be at the point of your departure. You will be informed when you collect your camper where you are not allowed to take your vehicle.
