Popular Destinations for Your USA RV Road Trip

The USA offers more RV road trip destinations than anywhere else in the world. Here are some of the most rewarding to build your next adventure around.

Las Vegas, Nevada, is one of the most popular starting points for RV tours in the south-west. Its central position makes it an ideal base from which to explore in multiple directions — north to Salt Lake City, west through Death Valley towards San Francisco, south to the Grand Canyon, or further along towards San Diego and the California coast. The surrounding Nevada desert is extraordinary to drive through, and the sheer variety of landscapes within a day's drive of Las Vegas is remarkable.

The Grand Canyon, Arizona, is one of the most iconic destinations in the world and a must on any USA RV trip. Several RV campgrounds serve the area in and around nearby Williams, Arizona, and the South Rim campground within the park itself (book well in advance). The Grand Canyon is a place that genuinely exceeds expectations in person - no photograph does it justice.

Yosemite National Park, California, is one of America's most visited national parks, and for good reason. Granite peaks, giant sequoias, and some of the most dramatic waterfalls in North America make it a highlight of any California RV trip. Campsite availability is limited and competitive – book as early as possible, particularly for summer travel.

Scenic Byway 12, Utah (nicknamed "A Journey Through Time Scenic Byway"), is around 123 miles long and is one of only a handful of roads in the USA to hold the designation of All-American Road, given to routes that are considered destinations in their own right. Running through the heart of southern Utah between Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef National Parks, it passes through Dixie National Forest, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, and some of the most otherworldly red rock terrain on earth. It's a relatively short drive but could comfortably fill several days with hiking, photography, and exploring the small towns along the route.

The Pacific Coast Highway (California) runs along the California coast from San Diego through Los Angeles and San Francisco and beyond. It's one of the most celebrated road trips in the world (particularly the stretch through Big Sur) and is perfectly suited to a campervan trip. Coastal campgrounds fill fast in summer; book ahead.

Florida offers a very different RV experience: warm winters, flat roads, the Florida Keys, Everglades National Park, and a huge network of well-equipped RV parks. Fort Lauderdale is a popular pick-up location for exploring the state. Florida is a particularly appealing destination for winter travel, when much of the northern USA is cold.

Denver, Colorado, and Salt Lake City, Utah, make excellent starting points for Rocky Mountain routes. Both cities have good depot access and position you well for Arches, Bryce Canyon, Rocky Mountain National Park, and the broader south-west.

From the east coast to the west coast, from the far north to the sunny south, the USA rewards travellers who give it time and take it at their own pace. Whether your next adventure begins in San Francisco, Las Vegas, or Fort Lauderdale – we're here to help you plan it.

Types of RV Available for Rental in the USA

Understanding which RV type suits your trip is one of the most important decisions you'll make. The US market offers more variety than almost anywhere else in the world, from compact camper vans to full luxury motorhomes with slide outs and master bedrooms.

Class B — Camper Vans The smallest motorised RV category, Class B vehicles, are built on a standard van chassis – think Sprinter-style builds – and typically range from around 17 to 24 feet in length. They handle much like a large SUV, making them among the easiest recreational vehicles to drive and park. Native Campervans and Travellers Autobarn are good examples available through Budget Campervans. Class B RVs are well-suited to solo travellers, couples, and those who want to move often and keep driving stress low. They're more fuel-efficient than larger classes, though living space is naturally more limited. If you're planning to explore major cities, navigate tighter roads, or venture somewhere a larger motorhome simply can't go, a Class B is hard to beat.

Class C Motorhomes Class C motorhomes are the most common RV rental in the USA and arguably the most versatile. Built on a truck or van cutaway chassis, they're easy to identify by the distinctive cab-over bed – an additional sleeping area that sits above the driver's cab. Class C motorhomes typically sleep between 4 and 6 people depending on layout, with a fully equipped kitchen, a separate bathroom with shower, a convertible dinette, and multiple sleeping arrangements including the cab over bed at the front. They offer significantly more living space than a Class B while still feeling manageable on the road. Road Bear RV and Cruise America both offer well-regarded Class C fleets through Budget Campervans, including models with slide outs that expand the interior space further when parked. For most first-time renters and families, Class C motorhomes represent the best balance of comfort and drivability.

Class A Motorhomes Class A RVs are the largest motorhomes available for rental — bus-shaped vehicles typically ranging from around 29 to 45 feet, with powerful engines, full-height ceilings, and interiors that feel closer to an apartment than a vehicle. A luxury Class A motorhome offers all the amenities: a master bedroom with a proper double or king bed, a full bathroom, a large fully equipped kitchen, an entertainment system, generous storage, and often multiple slide outs that nearly double the interior when extended. These are the vehicles of choice for extended family adventures, longer trips, or anyone who simply doesn't want to compromise on comfort. They are, however, the most expensive RV type to rent (daily rates can vary widely depending on age and specification) and their size means careful route planning is needed, particularly around national park campgrounds with vehicle length limits. That said, for travellers who want all the conveniences of home while exploring America, a Class A is a genuinely special experience.

Travel Trailers If you already have a suitable tow vehicle, travel trailers can be among the most affordable rental options in the USA. They're towable rather than self-powered, which means passengers cannot ride inside them while moving, but they offer a cosy living area with essential amenities at a lower daily rate than motorhomes. Daily rates for travel trailer rentals vary widely by size and specification. They're a practical choice for road trips where you'll be staying in one area for several days at a time.

Top Tips to Find the Best and Cheapest RV Rentals in the USA

All you need to know before you book your RV rental

The Rental Process

Booking an RV rental in the USA is straightforward, but a little preparation goes a long way towards making your trip as smooth and comfortable as possible.

Licence requirements: In most cases, a standard driver's licence is all you need to rent and drive an RV in the USA - most recreational vehicles fall within the weight threshold that doesn't require a commercial licence. International visitors should check whether their licence is in English; if not, an International Driving Permit is worth obtaining before travel. Some states have specific licensing rules for heavier or longer vehicles, so it's worth confirming requirements for your specific vehicle and route.

Road rules vary by state: Speed limits, seatbelt laws, and toll road regulations differ across the USA. As a general rule, all passengers should be seated and belted whenever the vehicle is moving. Seatbelt laws apply in virtually every state. Toll roads are common in the north-east and along parts of the California coast - budget for these as part of your trip planning.

International arrivals: If you're flying into the USA from abroad, you cannot collect your rental RV on the same day as arrival. An overnight stay is required before pick up - factor this into your booking dates.

One-way rentals: Picking up in one location and returning to another is a popular option, particularly on routes like New York to California. One-way rentals typically incur a relocation fee. To avoid this, pick up and return from the same depot.

Avoid Sunday collections or returns where possible - some depots operate restricted hours on Sundays and may charge an additional fee.

The 2-2-2 Rule – A Helpful Framework for RV Travel

One of the most widely shared pieces of advice among experienced RV travellers is the 2-2-2 rule: drive no more than 200 miles per day, aim to arrive at your campsite by 2 PM, and stay for at least 2 nights. It's an informal guideline rather than a hard rule, but the thinking behind it is sound. RVs handle very differently from cars - they're larger, slower to manoeuvre, and more tiring to drive for extended periods. Keeping daily distances manageable gives you time to enjoy where you are, rather than spending your holiday behind the wheel. Arriving early means you can set up calmly, explore your surroundings, and avoid the stress of finding a pitch in the dark. Staying two nights means at least one full day to properly experience a place.

For travellers who want more ground covered, the 3-3-3 rule (300 miles, 3 PM arrival, 3 nights) offers a slightly brisker pace while keeping the same principles intact.

Mileage

Most RV rentals in the USA are not unlimited mileage – you pre-purchase a mileage allocation and pay a per-mile fee for anything over your limit. Use Google Maps to estimate your intended route before booking, then purchase slightly less mileage than your total estimate (since you're likely to stop and explore rather than drive every mile you plan). Unlimited mileage options exist but are typically only cost-effective for longer rentals. Play with the booking engine to find the best value for your specific trip.

Insurance

Standard personal auto insurance typically does not cover RV rentals, so specialist coverage is needed. Most base rental rates include some level of collision and liability protection, but this varies between suppliers. Key options to understand:

CDW / LDW (Collision Damage Waiver / Loss Damage Waiver) covers damage to the vehicle you're renting. Note that tyre and windscreen damage may not be included – always check the policy details.

SLI (Supplemental Liability Insurance) is listed separately and covers accidental damage to a third party. This is widely recommended as an additional layer of protection on top of the standard package.

If you choose not to take out excess coverage, rental companies will typically require a significant security deposit held on your credit card. Read all insurance options carefully before booking, and call us if you need help working out what level of cover makes sense for your trip.

Taxes

These are listed in the summary of costs once you have entered all your preferences.

Follow the steps through the booking engine until the point where you enter payment details. If you get to this page, you will see a complete list of costs, including local and State taxes that apply to your campervan hire.

Generator Use and Additional Fees

Many RV rental companies charge per hour for generator use – this powers appliances like air conditioning and the microwave when you're not connected to an RV park's shore power (electrical hookup). Budget for this as part of your daily running costs, especially if you're dry camping or boondocking.

Cleaning fees on return typically range from around $75 to $300 depending on the company and condition of the vehicle. Most suppliers also charge a service fee if wastewater tanks are not emptied before return. Many rental suppliers provide a renter's kit, including essential kitchenware, bedding, and towels — check whether yours is included or available as an optional add-on, as buying basics at a discount store on your first day is often a cheaper alternative.

Campsite Booking

Many national parks campgrounds sell out months in advance – in some cases up to a year ahead for popular sites in peak season. Book your key nights as early as possible, particularly for Yosemite National Park, Yellowstone, Zion, and the Grand Canyon. The National Park Service reservation system (recreation.gov) is the place to start. RV parks and private campgrounds are generally easier to book at shorter notice and offer full hookups, including electricity, water, and waste connections.

Free camping ("boondocking") is legal in many areas of the USA, particularly on Bureau of Land Management land. Walmart car parks and truck stops are also traditionally welcoming to overnight RV stays. The AllStays app is a useful resource for finding free and low-cost overnight spots across the country.
