About Budget Campervans
We’ve been helping travellers find cheap campervan hire and motorhome rental since 1998. We compare established rental companies across over 50 countries, so you can see every price, fee and insurance option in one place before you book.
Who we are?
Budget Campervans was started by Mary Galbraith in 1998.
Back then, finding a campervan meant contacting rental companies one by one and piecing together prices, insurance and extras yourself. Mary built one place to compare them. More than 28 years later, the website still does the same job: helping people find the right campervan or motorhome at a fair price, with no surprises at the depot.
Budget Campervans is run by Campervans.com, based in the UK.
Mary Galbraith, Founder
Mary founded Budget Campervans in 1998, working with one campervan rental company in New Zealand. She formed close ties with Kea Campers, a start-up that became an award-winning New Zealand rental company. However, Mary had more customers than Kea had campers and so formed a close affiliation with Maui and Britz campers, who were and are still a premium New Zealand Brand.
New Zealand was Mary’s home for over 15 years, and so it made sense that New Zealand was the first country that she offered rentals from. This was closely followed by Australia, as many of Mary’s customers wanted to visit both New Zealand and Australia.
It made sense to add the USA and Canada soon after, and then Europe followed.
Not only is Mary very familiar with New Zealand as a country, but she also toured New Zealand several times in various campers and motorhomes. She has also toured Canada, Scotland and Ireland too.
"The rental companies that we partner with have always had to have a large enough fleet to have standby vehicles in reserve in case of breakdown, even though this doesn’t happen very often. When our customers are booking a holiday of a lifetime, the last thing anyone wants is to have to shorten it because of a lack of replacements.
We also look for resilience. The last few years have brought many challenges to rental companies worldwide, and those that have a sound base and longevity have proven themselves.
We do not ignore feedback from our customers. Too many bad reviews, and the rental company is removed from our booking engine, which is why some familiar names won’t be found on our site."
How Budget Campervans Works
We’re a comparison site, not a rental company. We don’t own vehicles. Bookings and customer support are handled by our booking partner, GoSee Travel, which works directly with the rental companies.
You search. Enter your dates, pick-up and drop-off locations and driver age.
You compare. You see vehicles from every rental company with availability, with prices, inclusions, fees and insurance options side by side.
You book. Your booking and payment are processed by GoSee Travel, part of the Webjet group.
You pick up your camper from the rental company. The rental company hands over the vehicle, gives you a familiarisation tour and provides breakdown assistance.
Support when you need it. GoSee Travel’s support team is available Mon–Sat, 10:00 AM until 2:00 AM (NZT, UTC+12) for questions before and during your trip.
How we make money
We earn a commission on bookings made through our site. As a customer, you pay the same price, or often less, than booking directly with the rental company. We are able to offer discounted rates due to the high volume of bookings that we make every year.
Commission rates don't determine which vehicles you see. Search results are sorted by price / size of camper / year of manufacture, and you can sort and filter them however you like.
