The roads around Milan and through the mountains are narrow and windy.  When travelling in a large motorhome take extra care and slow down. Driving a motorhome in these conditions is not like driving a car. Be aware of the height of your motorhome and if you have rented a large motorhome with a bed over the cab be careful of the overhang on the nearside especially travelling under bridges and trees.

Aires as in motorhome stopovers (like the French Aires de Service), Italy has similar facilities, but they are usually called "Aree di Sosta" (Rest Areas) or "Agricampeggi" (Farm Campsites).

Types of Aires in Italy:

1. Aree di Sosta – Dedicated motorhome stopovers with varying levels of facilities (waste disposal, water, electricity, etc.).

2. Camper Service Areas – Locations specifically for refueling water and emptying waste tanks.

3. Agricampeggi – Farms that allow campervan parking, often with local produce available.

4. Autostrada Service Areas – Some motorway stops (Autogrill areas) allow overnight parking, but usually without full services.

Toll Roads Around Milan:

There are toll roads on the A36 motorway or autostrada. The ring roads of Como (A59) and Varese (A60) are toll roads. The  A1 and A4 motorways also have tolls. Pay at the Alt Stazione. Ask your rental company when you collect your campervan hire where these are and if you can avoid them.

Watch out for ZTLs:

A "ZTL" in Italy stands for "Zona a Traffico Limitato", which translates to "Limited Traffic Zone" You are not permitted to drive within this zone without permission.
