The most expensive countries to rent a campervan during the summer months are in Scandinavia. Try renting in Poland, Romania or Lithuania. Wild camping is permitted in many European countries and will save you a lot in campsite fees. Always check that you are permitted to stay in these areas.

Choose a smaller, older camper as they are cheaper. Share with friends. Don't plan on driving long distances and buy local food and self-cater wherever possible. Buying food in cafes and restaurants can add to your costs significantly. Make your own teas and coffees.

Campsites, Aires, Stellplatz, Costas in Europe

There are thousands of campsites throughout Europe but also look out for the free or cheaper option of staying a night at the Aires, Stellplatz, and Costas that are in many countries throughout Europe.

The Aires are often on the outskirts of towns and villages and offer free overnight stays for Camper vans and motorhomes. It is worth joining a camping club to find good quality campsites at a discounted rate. Check closing times so you don't get locked out at night!

Motorhome hire Europe: Using the internet while travelling through

Most campsites now have free internet. Some towns also offer free access too. You can buy wifi dongles to keep you connected or tether your laptop to your phone's 4g. Check the rates on your data roaming. It may be cheaper to buy a local SIM card.

Check your international roaming charges for travel through Europe. It may pay you to buy a local pre-paid SIM card.

Some rental companies have inverters built into their campers to enable you to charge up your laptop, phone etc. Other companies charge extra. You will be able to charge up when connected to the mains power on campsites or charge up when you are driving along.

Fly-Drive in Europe.

Most of our campervan rental suppliers have depots close to the airport. So you can fly to the heart of your destination saving time. One-way rentals are available to and from most European cities.

Taking Pets in a Campervan to Europe.

Many rental companies allow pets to travel with you in your camper van for a small fee. Make sure that your pet has an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) instead of a pet passport.

Check with your vet that it has all the correct vaccinations and make sure your dog is chipped. This has to have been issued 10 days before travel. Also, check if the ferry companies and campsites allow pets.

You may have to muzzle your dog in some countries and pet restraints in the vehicle are required. Make sure your dog is wearing an id tag.

Is it cheaper to rent a motorhome to tour Europe or buy one? As a general rule if you are going to travel for more than 3 months then you will probably get a better deal buying one and then selling at the end of your trip.

However, it is always worth asking us to help you get a long-term discount. If you are flexible on dates and where you want to collect and return your camper then it gives us more to work with.
