Explore the USA and Canada by road trip. There have been so many movies about the wide open spaces and the incredible scenery that both the USA and Canada offer.
Yes! Renting a camper is one of the cheapest ways of exploring North America.
Self-catering saves so much money as you won't be stopping off for coffee, snacks, or restaurant meals. Fuel is also less expensive than in other parts of the world. Keeping hydrated during the summer months is easier with full tanks of drinking water that is even chilled in the on board fridge.
Renting a camper is cheaper than renting a car and staying in motels and it's more comfortable and less hassle than staying in a tent. Having your home on wheels lets you experience van life firsthand.
You will meet the locals and experience American culture. Changing your mind and staying longer than you planned or moving on earlier than expected is the freedom that comes with living in a van.
You won't need as much as you think!
Take the basics and wash your clothes as you travel. Keep warm with layers and cool with shorts and t-shirts. Take walking boots and sunscreen for the summer.
Keep everything tidy and travel with soft collapsible bags and not suitcases so you can pack them away easily. Include the basics for personal hygiene and rent or buy the extras. Take some smart casual clothes for an evening out.
But don't go overboard as camping is a simple life. If you plan to take photos plan to upload them to the cloud or onto a portable hard drive as you go.
You can rent a mobile hotspot in your rental RV. There are also internet hot spots in towns and cities. Make sure you take security seriously and log in and out of your email, cloud etc as you use these services. Be careful when using a credit card online. Set up a Virtual Private Network for a small monthly cost if security is an issue.
Having a good roaming service means that you can use GPS for finding your way. Check out what3words and to set where you parked for the night so you can find your rig easily. If you are going to be on the road for a long time consider buying a mobile router that access the mobile network to provide internet wherever you are.
There is a cost for this but it is more secure than using public wifi networks. If you have deep pockets and want fast internet access everywhere then Starlink could be an option.
Plug everything in while you are driving along or charge when you are on a powered site. You will need an inverter to charge up a laptop when you are not hooked up. Sometimes these are already in the larger RVs or can be an option to rent for the duration of your rental.
Take the usual precautions such as not leaving valuables in sight and making sure your vehicle is locked and windows and curtains closed when you leave your camper for any length of time. Leave valuables at home.
Travelling during the summer months of July and August can be expensive unless you book a year ahead. Travelling in the Spring and Autumn (Fall) is more cost-effective and again book as early as you can.
Try to get to your campsite before it gets dark. Get set up and ready for the evening. Level your camper on blocks as provided and turn on the gas ready for your dinner.
Yes, you can. You must return to the same country that you started in but not necessarily to the same city where you began your rental. So, if you collected your camper in Vancouver you could travel through the US and return to Calgary or another Canadian depot.
You will incur a one-way fee but there is no additional charges to take your motorhome across the border. Check the regulations on taking food, and pets with you across the border.
Some rental companies do allow travel to Mexico with additional insurance cover.
Our booking engine lets you add in or take out optional extras and we are always here to help you. You can call us or send an email. All our quotes are free as well as our help!
Choose how many beds you need.
If there are four of you and you are two couples then two double beds in a 4-berth are suitable. If there are four of you and you have two teenagers then a six berth with three doubles or choose a 4berth with a double and two singles.
In this Mighty Motorhome, there is a separate room with a double bed and three separate beds in the front of the motorhome. During the day the beds convert to seats and tables. The overhead bed slides away. It is important to select the correct night-time layout.
Choose your dates
Then you can start entering dates into our booking engine and where you want to collect the campervan and where you want to return it to. As taxes vary from State to State it is worth trying out both directions of the rental as taxes are applied at the point of pick up.
Pick your vehicle
Next, choose your vehicle. The earlier you book the cheaper the rates will be. Older RVs are cheaper than new ones. Larger motorhomes are cheaper than small truck campers.
Select any addons
The following must then be added:
Mileage : Check out the distances on google maps. Once you have a rough idea of how many miles you will travel, pre-pay the lowest amount and then top up at the end. It is often a false economy to buy unlimited mileage.
Insurance Every rental is covered by insurance with an insurance excess. The excess is left as a bond and payable on your credit card when you collect your campervan. This is refunded when the camper is returned in a good and clean condition at the correct time on the agreed day. If you are late, charges can be added
Other insurance options are available. Each rental company in North America has slightly different terms.
Optional extras: Bedding is charged separately. Take your own or buy at a local superstore as it may be cheaper. Other extras are easy to understand.
One-way rentals are a good option as it saves back-tracking. There is a re-location fee to be paid when you book a one-way rental.
There are thousands of campsites and hundreds of national parks. There is also a great network that supports boondocking.
We are proud to have been associated with both Cruise America and Cruise Canada for over 20 years. They offer a solid fleet of motorhomes and now a truck camper to appeal to a wide range of groups.
Canadream Canada. One of Canada's largest RV and motorhome rental companies offering a huge fleet of mid-range vehicles. Book early for great deals and check out their "run-of-fleet" offers too. Their maxi, midi and deluxe campers also included a 4x4 truck camper which is a very affordable camper for two adults and a child. Canadream caters to everyone from couples, groups of friends and families.
We suggest that you plan a basic route before you set off that way you will know your approximate mileage and can book a few key campsites especially if you are travelling during the summer months or national holidays. It's often easier to change a booking than it is to start a new one.
The only fixed dates are the ones that you made your booking for. If you do plan to stay longer please contact the reservations office as soon as you can. Returning an RV later than you booked can incur high fees.
Distances are great between the main centres. Unless you have months to do a road trip, we suggest picking one area and spending more time exploring and less time driving.
